Literacy and Numeracy

Upgrade Reading and Math Skills

Learners will use the Adult Learning and Literacy curriculum (STAGES)      for upgrading their literacy skills.     

 

You will start at a level that is best   for you.                                              

Manitoba Mature Student
High School Diploma

The Mature Student High School Diploma    (MSHSD) is a Manitoba provincial high          school diploma.                                               

Manitoba Education criteria for a Mature Student High School Diploma is:

Eight high school courses with four of these courses at the Grade 12 level. 

Previously earned high school credits (Grades 9-12) can be transferred to the MSHSD. 

Of the grade 12 courses required, one needs to be English Language Arts and

one needs to be Mathematics.

Learners can earn some or all of the eight (8) high school credits needed to graduate at SRAE.

What is the registration process? 

We offer continuous enrollment from September to June and are closed for July and August.

Contact the centre to check for our hours.  Site 1 (128 - 5th Avenue) : 204-734-9391  and Site 2 (1413 Main Street): 204-734-5686 

Provide a copy of your high school transcripts which would show previously earned credits. 

Students will complete a registration form, providing information regarding their educational background which is needed to create an education plan.   Instructors meet with students to discuss their individual education needs and future goals.

A Learner Code of Conduct form must be signed by all students.

Most new learners will need to write an assessment of skills in Math and English to determine the learner's needs.  The assessment process usually takes one to two hours. 

How old do I have to be to attend SRAE?

Students must be 19 years of age or over at the time or enrolment or reach the age of 19 before completion of the courses (s) in which they are enrolled.  Students who are 18 years of age are admitted on an individual basis.

 

What is the method of instruction?  What does program delivery look like at SRAE? 

SRAE does not offer regularly scheduled classes.  The programs are individualized and can be completed independently at the centre where assistance is readily available or at home.  The courses are delivered in modules or independent learning or through delivery by the teacher at the centre.  In order to meet the needs of all learners, the goal is to be flexible in programming and delivery to help each learner achieve success.

 

What do the courses cost?

A registration fee of $20 is required. (once a year registration fee) SRAE does not have tuition fees.

Students must be Canadian citizens, landed immigrants or permanent residents.   

Paper, pens, binders, calculators and other school supplies are provided as needed.  ​​​

Staff and students participated in a land based field trip with Shawn Charlebois through

Red Road Compass.

.... each plant had a purpose, whether for food, medicine or ceremony.  I noticed how the

leaves caught the sunlight, their colours changing, edges glowing as if alive with wisdom.
